When there’s a routine out there that can effectively cut your workout from an hour or more to just four minutes a day – all while actually increasing the effectiveness of your workout and maximizing results – people tend to sit up and take notice.
Unlike so many “quick fixes” out there, Tabata is a four-minute routine that actually works. There’s a reason why this simple, quick workout method is so incredibly effective – and it’s all in the science behind the routine.
As you may already know, the Tabata core workout method was created by Japanese scientist Dr. Izumi Tabata, who trained Olympic athletes.
His observations about the human body led him to create (then study, and verify) a groundbreaking method to condense a full hour’s workout into just four minutes – and get better results doing it.
The key to how Tabata works is in the rhythm of your movement.
Every human body has its own maximum speed – the absolute top, the pinnacle of what you can do. The trick is to push your body with rapid movement and focused effort to reach your personal peak for just 20 seconds, and then rest for 10.
By repeating this rhythm during your Tabata exercises, you condition your body to rise above its existing peak and reach new heights – FAST.
Most workouts keep you moving fairly quick, and pushing reasonably hard, but not at your true, ultimate peak.
At the end of the day, when you push somewhere in your “moderate” range of effort for an hour or more at the gym, you will see results…but they’ll come slower and be less well-rounded than the Tabata method.
Anyone can do anything for 20 seconds. Knowing that, Dr Tabata planned a regimen that stimulates your body into not only peak physical performance for 20 seconds, but also PEAK fat-burning, muscle toning, aerobic conditioning, and metabolism support for the rest of the day!
Dr. Tabata’s plan was developed to train Olympic athletes to reach, and exceed their bodies’ true peak performances. But this workout method isn’t just reserved for Olympians – these body-smart techniques can be harnessed and put to good use in almost anyone’s life!
Are Tabata Exercises Right For You?
Yes, we believe it is! After all, who wouldn’t want to make their workout time more effective by boiling an hour’s worth of work down to just four minutes?
In a lot of ways, a four-minute workout is going to be more effective than an hour-long one, simply because when the chips are down and life gets busy, the four-minute workout is the one you’ll actually do.
Everyone would like to take their fitness to the next level. But the majority of people just don’t have the time, and maybe the energy, to invest in making that happen.
Tabata cuts out the time you’d take driving to the gym, finding a good spot, putting up with distractions like idle chat from that over-friendly elliptical neighbor…not to mention those pesky “lunks” and “I’m better than you” size 000 girls giving you the stink eye from across the room.
You don’t have to shower in that iffy gym bathroom or drive home. All you have to do is an at home tabata workout spending just four minutes of focused movement to achieve your goals.
If you’re already investing an hour or more per day on fitness, consider for a moment how you would spend the extra 56 minutes (or more) that you’ll save by using the Tabata method.
You could learn a new recipe, catch up with an old friend, toss a ball around with your kids, or just indulge in some quality “me” time.
Not only does Tabata save time, but in the four minutes a day that you spend working out, Tabata exercises help your body achieve a more well-rounded and diverse effect than most traditional workout methods.Tabata exercises give you both aerobic and anaerobic workouts during those four minutes – meaning you’re getting benefits on muscular, cardiovascular, and circulatory levels. Not to mention kicking your metabolism into high gear for the next 12 hours!
There’s no doubt about it: Tabata helps people meet their fitness goals with the smallest and most efficient time investment possible.
No matter what your current fitness goals are, the reality is that you could choose many different paths to reach them. You may even be currently on one of those paths, running three miles a day or doing intensive strength training to build the body you’ve always wanted.
What makes Tabata different is not only that it requires only a fraction of the time that other methods cost – and who doesn’t want to spend just four minutes instead of an hour or two? – but Tabata is also different in that it’s actually more effective than other types of exercise.
The reason it’s more effective is grounded in the breakthrough understanding that Dr Tabata reached when he founded this method.
While traditional exercises push you somewhat, Tabata exercises require more of your body. And even though that requirement only lasts 20 seconds, your body will take the cue to develop more lean muscle, increase the efficiency of your internal systems, and burn more fat all so that it’ll be “easier” the next time you have to push that hard.
This is a basic part of our internal survival mechanism. Your body is programmed to behave this way, it’s in your DNA.
So by triggering your body’s “I better get stronger so I can handle this challenge” instincts, you can achieve rockstar results in a fraction of the time you’d normally spend working out.
This is the essence of working smarter, not harder. After Dr Tabata developed and published his methods using Olympic athletes, the techniques have been tested and studied time and time again. And the findings are always the same: Tabata exercises really work!
It’s amazing that such a simple technique exists and the whole world isn’t already using it. But the reality is, Tabata may not be for everyone.
- If you need to spend a lot of time on something and really suffer before you’re able to feel good about your accomplishment, Tabata won’t be right for you.
- If you’re not willing to invest your top level of effort for just 20 seconds in order to get the body you’ve always wanted, Tabata won’t be a good fit (and no other exercise routine will, either!).
- If you need to spend a ton of money on gym memberships, workout equipment, and trainers in order to feel you’ve really earned that beach body, then Tabata will just be too simple and too affordable for your way of thinking.
